I?m wondering if it was possible to take advantage of the really great workprinter setup to use it to easy the cutting of the original footage.
The target should be a projectable sound film, but without turnign the footage backward and forward 100 times in a viewer, changing splices several times, scratchin the film etc.
The whole splicing process should be done in only one run.
My idea is, to apply a special unit to the work printer, that prints the actual frame number into each frame it transfers. This could be done with a LED digital counter, connected to the trigger line for the mouse. The counter display should be optically superimposed into the picture.
Then you simply splice all your footage together on one reel, without changing anything and transfer it. The transfer result will bear a numeric seria of numbers, one in each frame.
Now you cut this work copy in nle software.
The result will be, that the original linear increasing seria of numbers is in another order, all is mixed up. In an excel table, you list all szenes with index numbers for every szene and type in what is the superimposed frame number where the szene starts. Now excel will sort for you the table in the order of frame numbers and you can cut your footage in the order that is located on the roll.
Before starting cutting, you prepare a board with at least the same number of clamps as the film has szenes and number them.
Then you forward the film in the viewer, until the frame counter shows the first number where to cut, according to the excel table. Mark the frame, pass it thru the counter and then cut it. Then search for the end frame and cut the complete szene out off the roll. Clamp the szene to the clamp which has the same number as the index number of the szene.
After finishing, all clamps will be filled up with the corresponding szenes, and you can splice all toghether, the film is ready and exactly combinig with your virtual film created in the nle system.
What do you think - and would it be possible to add the frame counter feature to the work printer?

Is this the same "excellent workprinter" that you were so suspicious of in a different thread?
Just kidding. Sure, it would be easy to include the read out. In fact, a small LED based or LCD based read out could simply be attached in front of the condenser lens near the bottom of the frame. It would be in focus along with the image. No special optics needed!
The simplest counter is to use a modified calculator that you wire two leads in parallel to the "=" button. Then you enter "0+1=" to set it up and everytime the two leads get a connection from the microswitch, it will increase by one. Easy!
Hmmmm. Maybe I'll add that to the permanent transfer set up I'm building.....
Thanks for the good idea, Pedro!

Roger,
I never had been suspicious concerning the work printer, I only disagree with the example fotos. The idea to use a condensor as a extreme close up lens is very good. The single frame drive meets exactly the NTSC requirements and would give theoretical the possibility to hi-res transfers, if the PC-equipment can handle this.
In Europe we do flicker-free conversion "on-the-fly", with modifyed 2 bladed shutters (or selectable shutters), at 25 fps (50/2) instead of 24 and 16,666 fps (50/3) instead of 18.
And for frame superimposing there is a comercial work print service available. The guy connects a counter to the projector, capturing it with a second video camera and superimposes the two images with a video mixer. Pre-prepared excel tables for master cutting are available as well as a Beaulieu flat board motor winder with secure coupled counter (no jumping frames).
